The cheeks are a facial feature that are closely linked to youthfulness. When people smile, we notice their cheeks. Are they high? Are they supple? Are they rosy? But as with other areas of the face, the elasticity of the skin—particularly on the cheeks—changes.
Over time, the cheek gets lower and skin starts to sag leaving people questioning what they can do to restore this area of the face.
The three primary options when it comes to cheek restoration are cheek implants, cheek lifts and cheek filler. Doctor Jean-Paul Azzi, double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon specializing exclusively in procedures of the face, nose and neck, breaks down the different types of options below.
CHEEK IMPLANTS:
While cheek implants are definitely an option for those who are not happy with the structure of their face, this type of procedure isn’t always the best solve. A cheek implant helps to restore prominence of the upper cheek area, but Doctor Azzi doesn’t particularly like cheek implants for most patients because, “they can get extruded, infected or move. They can also look a little fake.” One of the most important factors Dr. Azzi considers when determining which procedure is best suited for a patient is how natural the results will look.
CHEEK LIFT:
A cheek lift elevates the fat pad in the cheek to provide fullness to the top two quadrants of the face. Doctor Azzi will often times lift the cheeks when he is performing a lower blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) as he removes extra bags or skin under the eyes. He can also lift the cheeks with a deep plane mini facelift.
FILLER:
One of the most widely adopted methods is the use of filler to plump the cheeks. According to Doctor Azzi, “Many filler brands will work, but I try to use a thick, long lasting hyaluronic acid filler like Versa and Juvederm.” These types of filler can be used to contour the cheek bones and enhance them beautifully. Results can last for over one year!
