As we age, it’s common for us to become more and more self-conscious. Things just don’t look like they used to. Everyone knows that skin care practices can help preserve youth, but what is often forgotten, or totally left out of skin care practices, are two of the areas of the body that tend to show age the most – the hands and the neck.
The neck in particular is an area that people tend to start paying attention to as they age because it tends to change the most. The neck is actually inclusive of skin that has a different cellular composition than other parts of the body. The dermis on the neck tends to be thinner and far more prone to wrinkling. Skin thickness is directly correlated to collagen levels. The thicker the skin is, the more collagen there is in that area. The neck is just about as sensitive as the skin on our eyelids.
Additionally, the skin on the neck tends to be very dry because the neck has fewer sebaceous glands. These are super tiny glands that secrete an oily or waxy substance. Moisturized skin tends to have a glowy look to it and a youthful sheen.
There are also certain movements that you can do that affect the neck’s elasticity over time. If you are constantly stretching out your neck, or exercising your facial features, these movements over time have the ability to stretch out the lines of the neck! This type of stretching obviously creates a more aged appearance.
Since the skin on the neck is so dramatically different from skin on the rest of the body, it needs to be treated differently. Of course, the most obvious first step for neck care is to moisturize. Neck creams help provide the skin on the neck with moisture and collagen to help keep the skin as firm as possible. These creams are known to be slightly thicker than face moisturizers, but for good reason.
It’s also a good idea to apply sunscreen to your neck daily. The sun can do some serious damage. Then there are the exercises you can do for your neck that promote tighter skin. Some yoga studios teach this kind of stretching. It’s important you learn theses neck exercises from a professional so you don’t accidentally strain yourself.
If you’re past the point of precautionary routines and treatments, there is still a way to fine-tune your look. A possible remedy here would be a neck lift, an effective and easy way to address sagging skin and signs of aging. A neck lift is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat around the jaw line, ultimately creating a younger appearance. Incisions are very small so scarring is not a concern.
