When we want to add a little plump to our pout, most of us automatically think: fillers. Sure, you can get great results with injectables, but there is another great solution. It's called a lip lift, and the best part? The results are permanent! The lip lift has been one of plastic surgery’s best kept secrets and it has recently been let out of the box.
Lift lips were originally performed primarily on older patients, but as time progressed, surgeons found a way to modify the procedure, making it ideal for younger patients as well. The first modern lip lift was reportedly performed in Beverly Hills, California. Currently, there are only a handful of facial plastic surgeons, like Dr. Jean-Paul Azzi, who properly perform this highly specialized procedure.
In a nut shell, a lip lift addresses the space between the bottom of the nose and the top lip, aka the philtrum. By shortening the space from the nose to the lip, the upper lip is brought upward and rolled out, creating a fuller look. Dr. Azzi performs lip lifts under local anesthesia only while the patient remains awake. It’s a procedure that takes about 30 minutes with just a few days to a week of potential downtime.
If you'd like a fuller top lip, and if the area between the bottom of your nose and the tip of your lips is larger than desired, a lip lift may be the best way to address this. When the philtrum is elongated, it can create an undesirable droopy look in the mouth area, and sometimes even an undesired grimace.
Another situation that would make a person an ideal candidate for a lip lift has to do with the way the lips age. Some people find that as they grow older, the upper lip skin becomes less elastic and begins to hang over the front teeth more and more, subsequently affecting their smiles. While this can be fixed through Juvederm, Belotero or some other kind of lip filler, you may find yourself having to go back to the doctor frequently to maintain results. Unbeknownst to many people, a lip lift can permanently improve the aesthetics of the lips and smile.
Here are a few of Dr. Azzi's lip lift patients:
Just like there are situations that make someone a great candidate for a lip lift, there are surely times when this would not be advised. For patients who have a gummier smile or a narrow area between the base of the nose and the top of the lift, steer away from the lip lift as this will potentially enhance those already very defined kind of features.
