Can Facial Fillers by Reversed?

We’re all familiar with dermal filler injections. If we’re being honest, we could all probably use some smoothing out, some plumping and a little youthful recovery from time to time. Unfortunately, not all patients are lucky enough to have the guidance and direction of a skilled doctor, like Dr. Jean-Paul Azzi. The reality is there is such a thing as too much. Some procedures are just not right for certain people and it is a doctor’s responsibility to help guide the patient into making the right decisions.

When done properly, dermal filler injections typically provide more symmetry, and subtle adjustments to the face. Cosmetic medicine, however, is as much of an art as it is a science and some patients have less than perfect outcomes. Underqualified providers can easily make the mistake of overfilling, in turn throwing off facial symmetry and causing prolonged swelling or lumpiness.

Luckily, double board certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Jean-Paul Azzi is able to aid in these situations. Mild symptoms like lumpiness and slight asymmetry can be improved via facial massage. It is important that a professional, such as Dr. Azzi, perform this massage because it is possible to make the results worse.

Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero can actually be partially or completely removed with an enzyme. Ultimately, the doctor will inject the affected areas with hyaluronidase. This enzyme helps dissolve acid particles to ease overfilling, infection, excessive swelling or vascular issues.

Non-hyaluronic acid fillers require a different approach. For Radiesse, Bellafill and Sculptra, a steroid injection could help reverse the effects, to an extent. Of course, with all of the aforementioned filler reversals, nothing is promised. Each person and each situation needs to be evaluated independently.
