Maintaining Your Facelift Results

Unbeknownst to many patients, and soon to be patients, skincare plays a major role in preserving the youthful results of any facelift. Long after the bandages are removed, there are extra precautions that can be taken to prolong the look we are all so intent on maintaining.

SUN PROTECTION

First and foremost, sun protection is key. One of the leading causes of signs of aging is sun exposure due to the UV rays that break down proteins in the skin. Prolonged exposure to the sun has been attributed to the acceleration of lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. All of these can impact facelift results. Dr. Jean-Paul Azzi of the Palm Beach Center for Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery recommends using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. You should apply any time you go outside.

DIET

Additionally, an easy way to maintain healthy-looking skin, and prolong the effects of a facelift, is to eat a balanced diet. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains provide a great assortment of vitamins and minerals to help keep the skin elastic. Vitamin C, in particular, helps the skin maintain its glow. Eliminating the wrong foods from your diet is just as important as incorporating the right ones. Consider cutting back on sugar.

COSMETIC TREATMENTS

Just because you had a facelift doesn’t mean you aren’t a good candidate for other types of cosmetic treatments, either. Often times skin rejuvenation, laser treatments and injectables help keep the skin tight and smooth. It’s always best to consult with your facial plastic surgeon first if you’ve recently had a facelift. Timing for these different treatments should be suggested by a doctor.

Of course, the best way to keep long-lasting effects of a facelift is to keep close communication with a board-certified plastic surgeon. If you’ve recently had a facelift, we welcome you to speak with Dr. Azzi about steps you can take to maintain your results.
