Split Earlobe Repair – What You Should Know

Split Earlobe Repair - What You Should Know

Split or torn earlobe repair is a common procedure at The Palm Beach Center for Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery and trauma isn’t the only reason for the procedure. In fact, one of the most common reason for split earlobes is a result of wearing earrings. Over time, earrings can pull and stretch the piercing hole leaving the earlobe stretched and elongated. Surprisingly, this is not the most common reason for stretched or torn earlobes. Most people, including most physicians, don’t realize that the cause can actually be an allergy or sensitivity to the metal in the post of the earring. When the piercing holes become stretched, the bottom of the piercing hole may actually wear all the way through and tear – and at this point, wearing earrings becomes impossible.

Fortunately, Dr. Azzi can repair split or torn earlobes. During this painless, in office procedure, Dr. Azzi repairs the tear by freshening the edges of the split, and then repairing the edges precisely to minimize the likelihood of notching at the edge of the earlobe. The procedure takes roughly thirty minutes.

Split earlobe repair is almost always performed under local anesthesia (meaning patients remain awake) right in Dr. Azzi’s office. Dr. Azzi performs these repairs very meticulously to ensure a natural and aesthetically pleasing result. Sutures are removed after one week. After 6 to 8 weeks, the earlobes can be re-pierced and the patient can wear earrings once again. Dr. Azzi frequently re-pierces the ears himself.

Dr. Azzi often sees patients who wore ear plugs or gauges. This repair involves cutting off some of the excess skin to reshape and restore the ear to its natural shape.
